STATEMENT
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE
PARLIAMENTARY ASSEMBLY OF THE MEDITERRANEAN
ON THE CLASHES ALONG THE GAZA STRIP BORDER
The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, Hon. Pedro Roque, expresses his deep concerns following the deadly clashes at the Gaza border, in which more than 50 Palestinians lost their lives and hundreds were wounded adding to the previous victims in the last few weeks.
President Roque calls on all parties to show restraint and to do their utmost to avoid further escalation of violence along the border in the Gaza strip. He also calls for the strict respect of international humanitarian law by all parties in order to protect civilians.
These tragic events highlight once again the unsustainability of the situation in Gaza and the urgency to create conditions for the resumption of negotiations, with a view to a two-state solution based on the coexistence, in peace and security, of Israel and Palestine. PAM reiterates its full support to the Israeli-Palestinian dialogue and negotiations aimed at reaching a long-term solution.
Hon. Roque expresses his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a full and fast recovery to the injured.
